Creative Tonic Design Courtnay2.jpg

Our world is a vibrant place and, for as long as I can remember, I’ve felt compelled to weave brilliance into my surroundings. As a child, gracefully styled vignettes filled the corners of my home, each sharing hints of my family’s story. My room was carpeted in soft lavender and spirited textiles courtesy of the 80s were running wild through my head. Studying 19th and 20th-century decorative arts at Sotheby’s London further solidified my appreciation for saturated hues, richly appointed textiles, and homes as the tellers of our stories.

I founded Creative Tonic in 2006 with a passion for composing layered environments that invite celebration. With a fearless use of color and decidedly inventive flair, our award-winning work has been praised by renowned editorial teams, including House Beautiful, Elle Décor, Luxe Interiors + Design, and PaperCity.

Michael Hilal.jpg

Being a Mexican and Palestinian California native, my aesthetic was largely shaped by my family of creatives and the region’s innate connection with nature. I would largely categorize my style as California Design. For me it means the spaces, whether they be modern or traditional, are connected to the outdoors. When I approach a project, whether it be a classic San Francisco Victorian or a Southern California Modern I want to see natural stone, wood grains and patina on everything and a lot of handmade finishes.

After working for years at several high-profile tech companies, I could not ignore my true passion. I began studying interior architectural design through UCLA while working a demanding day job. One of my professors told me I had talent, but that I was killing myself. I decided that I would dive off of the deep end head first and follow my passion. I opened up my own firm and since have completed several projects across the state without pause.
